San Juan County, Navajo Nation COVID-19 case updates for October 2021

Welcome to the October edition of The Farmington Daily Times' daily COVID-19 news and stats blog. Daily updates are below, short news items are on top.

The New Mexico Department of Health has resumed large-scale vaccination events with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to accommodate those who are eligible for their third dose. They are now weighing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about new approvals of booster shots.

"On Thursday, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the approval of booster doses for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines for certain populations. (Pfizer boosters have been available since late September.)," the Department of Health said in a news release Friday, Oct. 22.

The state health department through the San Juan County Public Health Office will hold the next clinics:

Nov. 2 at McGee Park Convention Center from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Nov. 4 at the San Juan College HHPC from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

There will also be a free flu vaccine clinic at the San Juan County Public Health Office on Nov. 4 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for people ages 6 months and older.

A third shot is available for people who are either immunocompromised, who are 65 and older or are 50 and older with underlying medical conditions.

First and second doses will be administered during vaccination events as well.

"Many New Mexicans will benefit from additional protection, and DOH will work hand-in-hand with our healthcare partners to ensure that boosters are available," DOH Acting Secretary David R. Scrase, M.D. said in the news release. "That said, the most urgent task remains vaccinating New Mexicans who have not yet received their primary doses – and we encourage them to do so."

People can pre-register at vaccinenm.org to reserve their dose. There will be on-site registration and walk-ins depending on the available doses.

COVID-19, flu vaccination effort continues in Shiprock

People who receive medical services under the Shiprock Service Unit of the Navajo Area Indian Health Service are eligible for flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines in a drive-thru vaccination event by Northern Navajo Medical Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 at Shiprock High School.

The hospital updated its information for flu shots and the COVID-19 vaccine last week.

Flu shots can be administered to children ages 3-17 and to adults 18 and older.

Children ages 12-17 and adults 18 and older can receive the first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Now that booster shots of Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized by the CDC, the hospital's eligibility is:

• People who got the J&J vaccine more than two months ago may receive a booster dose of any of the three vaccines.

• People who got a second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine more than six months ago may receive a booster dose with any of the three vaccines if they are:

65 and older
18 and older and have a health condition that puts them at risk of contracting COVID-19
18 and older and have a job that puts them at greater risk of infection, such as health care workers, first responders or work in settings that have frequent contact with the public

The hospital requests those seeking a second or third dose bring their vaccine information cards or a copy of their immunization records.

Updates for Sunday, Oct. 31

The Navajo Nation on Sunday reported 67 more COVID-19 cases and two additional deaths, The Associate Press reported.

The latest numbers pushed the tribe's totals to 36,817 confirmed COVID-19 cases from the virus since the pandemic began more than a year ago.

The known death toll now is at 1,487.

The Navajo Department of Health had reported 105 more COVID-19 cases but no deaths Friday for the 20th time in the past 30 days and then 77 cases and one death on Saturday.

Based on cases from Oct. 8-21, the tribal health department issued an advisory notice for 48 communities due to uncontrolled spread of COVID-19.

"Unfortunately, in-person family and social gatherings are leading to more cases of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation," tribal President Jonathan Nez said. "In addition, residents who travel to cities off our Nation and let their guard down often bring back the virus to their households. We have to do better and we have to remind our loved ones to take precautions and wear a mask in public whether they are on or off the Navajo Nation."

The tribe's reservation is the country's largest at 27,000 square miles (70,000 square kilometers) and covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

Updates for Saturday, Oct. 30

5:35 p.m.: Health officials on the Navajo Nation report today 77 new COVID-19 cases and one more death related to the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 36,745 cases. The tally includes 15 cases that reporting was delayed.

The number of people who have died is 1,485.

The report states that 34,378 individuals have recovered from COVID-19 while 362,397 tests have been administered.

Updates for Thursday, Oct. 28

5:42 p.m.: Health officials on the Navajo Nation report 97 new COVID-19 infections and no virus-related deaths today for the tribe.

There have been 36,508 cases of the virus since the pandemic started. The tally includes delayed reporting for two cases today.

The death toll remains at 1,484.

"Unfortunately, in-person family and social gatherings are leading to more cases of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation. There are 34,253 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 360,992 tests have been conducted.

5 p.m.: COVID-19 case numbers – across the state and in San Juan County – jumped markedly Thursday, as did the number of people being treated New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections, according to figures released by the New Mexico Department of Health.

Thursday's news release reported 1,309 new COVID-19 cases across the state, 167 of them in San Juan County. It also reported 12 recent deaths, including that of an unidentified San Juan County resident.

On Wednesday there were new 959 cases reported in New Mexico. On Tuesday the state reported 687 new cases.

New Mexico has recorded 274,155 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 5,039 deaths.

San Juan County has seen 21,652 cases since the start of the pandemic and 553 deaths as of Thursday.

In contrast to the 167 new San Juan County cases reported Thursday, there were 77 cases reported Wednesday in San Juan County and 91 on Tuesday.

There were 424 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections Thursday. On Wednesday that number was 389, and on Tuesday 372 people were being treated in hospitals.

"As of today, there are 241,669 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the news release stated.

The state has reported at least one positive COVID-19 case in residents and/or staff in the past 28 days at the following long-term care facilities in San Juan County:

Updates for Wednesday, Oct. 27

7:50 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting 119 new cases of COVID-19 today.

The update also had 35 cases were reporting was delayed. The total number of cases is now 36,409.

Nine additional deaths were reported by the three agencies. There have been 1,484 people who have died since the pandemic started.

"With the high number of new cases on the Navajo Nation and over 6,000 new cases reported today for the entire state of Arizona, it's very alarming and cause for great concern. Our Navajo people need to be aware and be extra cautious. Throughout this pandemic, we've been telling our people that the safest place to be is at home here on the Navajo Nation," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the news release.

"We know that there is pandemic fatigue across the country and here on the Navajo Nation, but we cannot let our guard up. If you choose to travel, please wear a mask in public and be very cautious. Large in-person family gatherings are also leading to new infections and at times the loss of life because people let their guard down at birthday parties, weddings and other family gatherings. We have to remain strong, do better and continue to pray that we see a reduction in the spread of COVID-19, but our actions have to meet our prayers halfway," Nez said.

5:09 p.m.: Fifteen more pandemic-related deaths were reported by the New Mexico Department of Health on Wednesday and 959 new COVID-19 cases.

The state has counted 272,855 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, which has so far claimed the lives of 5,027 New Mexicans, according to a state news release.

San Juan County, which has seen 21,486 cases since the start of the pandemic and 552 deaths as of Wednesday, reported 77 new cases.

There were 389 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals on Wednesday due to COVID-19 infections.

"As of today, there are 241,090 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the news release said.

5:50 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation have announced 32 new infections of COVID-19 today.

The update included delayed reporting for 62 cases, the total number of cases is now 36,255.

The death toll rose to 1,475 with today's report of one death related to the virus.

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center have been disclosing case numbers since last year from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS:

4:27 p.m.: New COVID-19 cases in New Mexico numbered 687, state health officials reported on Tuesday. Eleven more COVID-19-related deaths were also reported Tuesday in a news release from the state health department.

Statewide there have been 271,898 reported cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began and 5,012 deaths as of Tuesday.

There were 91 new cases reported on Tuesday in San Juan County, which has seen 21,409 cases since the start of the pandemic and 551 deaths as of Tuesday.

Updates for Monday, Oct. 25

8:05 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other health agencies for the Navajo Nation reported 37 new cases of COVID-19 on Oct. 25.

While there were no recent deaths listed in the update, the agencies stated there was one death were delayed reporting happened. The death toll is now 1,474.

Since the pandemic started last year, the tribe has had 36,161 cases. This number includes delayed reporting for 15 cases.

In the update, the department issued a health advisory notice for 48 communities on the tribal land over the rate of COVID-19 infections, based on cases from Oct. 8 to Oct. 21.

5:16 p.m: A three-day reporting period yielded 2,335 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico, state health officials said on Monday in a news release.

The release also listed 15 more deaths due to the pandemic recorded between Oct. 23 and Oct. 25, including two unidentified residents of San Juan County.

New Mexico has recorded 271,212 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, and 5,002 COVID-19-related deaths, the news release said.

Of the new cases, 422 were reported in San Juan County during the three-day period.

The county has seen 21,320 cases since the pandemic began and 550 deaths as of Monday, Oct. 25

There were 339 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals on Monday due to COVID-19 infections.

"As of today, there are 240,277 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the release said.

Navajo Nation officials have reported 24 additional COVID-19 cases and two deaths from the virus as of Sunday night, The Associated Press reported.

Tribal officials still are urging people to get vaccinated, wear masks while in public and minimize their travel.

Since the pandemic began, 36,109 COVID-19 cases and 1,473 deaths from the virus have been reported on the tribe's reservation, which is the country's largest at 27,000 square miles (70,000 square kilometers). It covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

Updates for Saturday, Oct. 23

The Navajo Nation has reported 61 more COVID-19 cases, but no coronavirus-related deaths for the 17th time in the past 24 days, The Associated Press reported.

The latest numbers released Saturday pushed the tribe's totals to 36,083 confirmed COVID-19 cases from the virus since the pandemic began more than a year ago.

The known death toll remains at 1,471.

Health officials had reported 69 more cases and no deaths Friday on the tribe's reservation.

Tribal officials still are urging people to get vaccinated, wear masks while in public and minimize their travel.

Based on cases from Oct. 1-14, the Navajo Department of Health issued an advisory for 31 communities due to the uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus.

All Navajo Nation executive branch employees had to be fully vaccinated against the virus by the end of September or submit to regular testing.

4:25 p.m.: State health officials reported 982 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico on Friday and 14 more pandemic-related deaths.

The state has recorded 268,891 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, and New Mexico has lost 4,987 residents, according to a news release from the New Mexico Department of Health.

The deaths of two unidentified San Juan County residents in their 70s brought the number of county residents who have died due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic to 548 as of Friday. San Juan County has recorded 20,899 cases since the pandemic began.

There were 352 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals Friday due to COVID-19 infections.

"As of today, there are 238,146 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the release said.

6:17 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other health agencies announced today 77 new COVID-19 cases and no recent deaths for the Navajo Nation.

Since the pandemic started last year, there have been 35,660 cases on the tribal land. This number includes delayed reporting for three cases.

The number of deaths remains at 1,471.

"Not wearing a mask and family gatherings are still major concerns and a factor in the number of new cases of COVID-19 on the Navajo Nation. With the holidays approaching and the winter season coming, the leaders and public health experts are very concerned about how that might affect the spread of the virus," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

He added, "we are now in the flu season, and it is important to practice preventative measures to avoid any exposure."

4:28 p.m.: State health officials reported 1,132 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico on Thursday and seven more deaths related to the pandemic.

The case numbers statewide add up to 267,909 cases reported in New Mexico since the pandemic began, and 4,973 COVID-19-related deaths, according to a news release from the state Department of Health.

San Juan County, which reported 169 new cases Thursday, has recorded 20,732 cases since the pandemic began and 546 deaths.

There were 379 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Thursday, the release said.

6:48 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health has extended the orange status on businesses that operate on the Navajo Nation.

Businesses will continue to operate under moderate to high restrictions because the tribe is "experiencing a steady plateau of high transmission cases," the department stated in public health order issued on Oct. 18.

While not much has changed in the order, it now allows movie theaters to open and operate at 50% of maximum occupancy.

It also limits holiday gatherings to 15 people. Public Health Emergency Order No. 2021-020 can be viewed on the department's COVID-19 website.

The department in coordination with Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting 85 new COVID-19 infections for the tribe today.

Since the pandemic began last March, there have been 34,999 cases. This tally includes delayed reporting for two cases.

6:35 p.m.: There are 38 communities on the Navajo Nation under a health advisory for uncontrolled COVID-19 infections.

The Navajo Department of Health released the notice today, based on cases from Oct. 1 to Oct. 14.

Making the list in the Northern Agency in San Juan County are Newcomb, Sanostee, Sheep Springs, Shiprock, Two Grey Hills and Upper Fruitland.

Also on the list are Baca-Prewitt, Birdsprings, Bodaway-Gap, Cameron, Chinle, Church Rock, Coyote Canyon, Crystal, Ganado, Houck, Indian Wells, Iyanbito, Kaibeto, Kayenta, Lupton, Manuelito, Many Farms, Mexican Water, Piñon, Red Valley, Rock Springs, Shonto, St. Michaels, Teec Nos Pos, Teesto, Thoreau, Tohatchi, Tonalea, Tsaile-Wheatfields, Tsayatoh, Tselani-Cottonwood and Tuba City.

4:35 p.m.: The three-day reporting period that ended Monday, Oct. 18, yielded 1,895 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico, state health officials said on Monday.

The New Mexico Department of Health's news release covering cases reported between Oct. 16 and Oct. 18 also listed 12 more deaths associated with COVID-19, two of those residents of San Juan County.

The state has reported 265,632 cases since the start of the pandemic, and 4,942 COVID-19-related deaths.

San Juan County, which has reported 20,393 cases since the start of the pandemic, has reported 544 deaths as of Monday. The county logged 384 new cases during the three-day reporting period.

Updates for Saturday, Oct. 16

The Navajo Nation has reported 31 more COVID-19 cases, but no additional deaths for the 11th time in the past 17 days, The Associated Press reported.

The numbers released Saturday pushed the tribe's totals to 34,814 confirmed COVID-19 cases from the virus since the pandemic began more than a year ago.

The known death toll remains at 1,464.

"Contact tracers continue to find that many new cases of COVID-19 are due to family gatherings where people let their guard down and don't wear masks," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in a statement. "We have to remain diligent and do our best to follow the guidance of our health care experts."

Tribal officials still are urging people to get vaccinated, wear masks while in public and minimize their travel.

All Navajo Nation executive branch employees had to be fully vaccinated against the virus by the end of September or submit to regular testing.

Updates for Friday, Oct. 15

8 p.m.: Northern Navajo Medical Center announced today that the Brigham and Women's Hospital will offer $50 gift cards to the first 50 people who get the first or second COVID-19 vaccine on Oct. 17.

That's when the hospital will hold a vaccination event for flu shots and the COVID-19 vaccine from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Shiprock High School.

Third shots of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be available for individuals who met the criteria under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

10:15 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation report 11 new cases of COVID-19 today.

The update explained that 83 additional cases were disclosed today from the state of New Mexico and other health care facilities. These cases date back to Oct. 4.

There now have been 34,600 case on the tribal land since the pandemic began.

Officials also reported six additional virus-related deaths, raising the death toll to 1,463.

5:23 p.m.: State health officials on Wednesday reported 709 new COVID-19 infections, bringing New Mexico's total caseload to 262,078 since the start of the pandemic.

The state also reported in a news release that there were 14 more deaths among New Mexico residents Wednesday related to COVID-19, bringing the state's death toll since the pandemic began to 4,899.

San Juan County reported 61 new cases on Wednesday and no new deaths. The county has recorded 19,777 COVID-19cases since the pandemic began and 539 deaths as of Wednesday.

The 14 new deaths reported by the Department of Health on Wednesday included two deaths that happened more than 30 days ago.

4:46 p.m.: Health officials said they logged 2,433 new cases of COVID-19 in New Mexico during a four-day reporting period that began Oct. 9 and ended on Oct. 12.

The new numbers bring the state's total caseload since the pandemic began to 261,370, according to a news release from the New Mexico Department of Health.

The state also reported 16 more deaths during that period, including two unidentified San Juan County residents. Two of those 16 deaths happened more than 30 days ago and were just recently recorded as related to COVID-19.

New Mexico has lost 4,885 people due to COVID-19 since the pandemic began, 539 of those deaths among residents of San Juan County.

San Juan County reported 369 new cases over the four-day counting period. The new numbers bring the total of cases reported in the county since the pandemic began to 19,716.

There were 308 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, the release said.

6:50 p.m.: Today's update by the Navajo Department of Health and other health agencies lists 11 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation.

Since the pandemic began last March, there have been 34,458 cases for the tribe. The tally includes 51 cases reported on Oct. 8, 32 cases reported on Oct. 9 and 55 cases reported on Oct. 10.

The death toll is 1,456 and includes one death reported on Oct. 8 and two deaths reported on Oct. 10. No additional deaths were reported on Oct. 9 and today.

The department issued a health advisory notice for 33 communities because of the number of COVID-19 cases from Sept. 24 to Oct. 7.

"Masks and vaccines work. The data shows that masks help to reduce the spread of COVID-19 from person to person. The vaccines are effective in reducing the severity of symptoms if you contract COVID-19 and reduces the chances of being hospitalized or losing your life. We have to remain strong and focus on being cautious, especially if you travel or go into public places," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

8:30 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw 22 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths related to the virus in today's report by health officials today.

Since the pandemic started last year, there have been 34,194 cases. The death toll remains at 1,447.

"The main drivers of the new COVID-19 cases here on the Navajo Nation are in-person family and social gatherings such as birthday parties. In those settings, people tend to let their guard down and not wear masks, which sometimes leads to the spread of COVID-19 among family members and relatives," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

He reminded tribal members and residents to stay at home, take precautions and get vaccinated.

The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center have been disclosing case numbers from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS:

5:05 p.m.: The state Department of Health on Tuesday reported 540 new COVID-19 infections across New Mexico.

The department's daily news release also announced seven more deaths related to COVID-19, including an unidentified San Juan County resident.

San Juan County reported 45 new COVID-19 cases, 17 of them in the 87401 Farmington-area Zip Code. The county has reported 18,875 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 535 deaths as of Tuesday.

5:45 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health has placed 35 communities on its latest health advisory notice over the rate of COVID-19 cases.

Baca-Prewitt, Becenti, Bread Springs, Cameron, Chichiltah, Chinle, Church Rock, Coyote Canyon, Crownpoint, Dennehotso, Ganado, Indian Wells, Iyanbito, Kaibeto, Kayenta, Leupp, Manuelito, Nageezi, Naschitti, Pinedale, Piñon, Rock Springs, Sheep Springs, Shiprock, Teec Nos Pos, Teesto, Thoreau, Tohatchi, Tonalea, Tsayatoh, Tuba City, Twin Lakes, Two Grey Hills, Upper Fruitland and Whitehorse Lake are on the advisory.

The department made its determination based on cases from Sept. 17 to Sept. 30.

"This week, we see a slight decrease from 40 to 35 communities identified as having uncontrolled spread of COVID-19. We have to work together and urge our loved ones to be very cautious so that we can have zero communities with uncontrolled spread of this virus," tribal President Jonathan Nez said today.

Health officials reported 29 new cases of COVID-19 today for the tribe. The total number of cases is 34,172. The tally includes delayed reporting for one case.

There were no additional virus-related deaths in the report. There have been 1,447 people who have died since the pandemic started.

5 p.m.: The three-day reporting period ending Oct. 4 yielded 1,776 new COVID-19 cases in New Mexico, state health officials reported Monday in a news release.

The news release also announced 12 more deaths, nine of them recent and three of which were delayed in reporting by more than 30 days.

New Mexico Department of Health has recorded 255,577 cases across the state since the pandemic began. The number of deaths among New Mexicans due to COVID-19 reached 4,823 on Monday.

San Juan County, which reported 256 new cases during the three-day count, has reported 18,826 cases since the pandemic began and 534 deaths as of Monday.

The state on Monday reported 12 more deaths related to COVID-19.

"As of today, there are 226,781 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the news release stated.

The release said the total number of COVID-19 cases reached 34,142 on Sunday, including one case that was delayed in reporting.

6:58 p.m.: The New Mexico Department of Health reported today 791 new COVID-19 cases in the state, including 81 new cases in San Juan County.

The department reported 11 more deaths related to the virus. However, one death occurred more than 30 days ago involving a woman in her 40s from Lea County. She had underlying conditions.

Delayed reporting can happen when there is insufficient information for the death certificate, the department explained in the update.

5:35 p.m.: Health officials report 76 new cases of COVID-19 and no additional deaths related to the virus for the Navajo Nation.

Today's update raises the total number of cases to 34,071. There have been 1,447 deaths since the pandemic started last March.

"It is the start of a new month and many of our elders are receiving Social Security and other benefits. We strongly urge all of our people to be very cautious in public, wear a mask or two, and do your best to practice social distancing," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.

"We are still in the midst of a pandemic and COVID-19 continues to be a threat to everyone, especially in cities and regions off of the Navajo Nation. The safest place to be is at home here on the Navajo Nation. Please be cautious and get fully vaccinated if you haven't already," he added.
