Hoffman and Sons, an Alamogordo construction company, voluntarily closed its doors indefinitely after a series of complaints led the City of Alamogordo to consider a revocation of its business license.

The Alamogordo City Commission had planned a public hearing on the revocation April 9, but city officials said the company's decision negated its need.

"The City received multiple complaints regarding this business. City Clerk (Rachel) Hughs' sent a notice of public hearing on March 20 that stated a public hearing was scheduled for April 9 to consider the validity of these complaints along with the possible revocation of the business registration," Deputy City Clerk Dylan Aleshire said.

"The business owner voluntarily came to City Hall on March 22 and closed his business registration along with an affidavit. This eliminated the need for the public hearing."

Alamogordo's Code and Ordinances, Chapter 17 provides an avenue for the City to revoke business registration and licenses. "If the city manager determines that revocation of the license is in the best interest of the public health, safety, or welfare, the city clerk shall notify the licensee in writing of the proposed revocation, specifying the nature of the charges for which revocation is sought, and specifying a date for a hearing before the city commission."

The Alamogordo Daily News, however, was unable to clarify the nature of the complaints against Hoffman and Sons.

Owner Donald Hoffman has been in business since 1993 but was only accredited by the Better Business Bureau in Nov. 2019. The business has a one-star rating with seven complaints, the earliest dating back to 2021.

Hoffman stated in an interview with the Alamogordo Daily News that his 35-year-old business only began receiving complaints over the last two years when he passed its management on to a foreman. Hoffman did not provide the man's name.

"I've been incapacitated. Presently I am not, but during all the complaints I was bedridden, and I was even flown by helicopter to Las Palmas hospital (a hospital in El Paso, Texas)," Hoffman said. "During that time, I had to rely upon workers. When I got back on my feet, I let him go because I wasn't satisfied with the work."

Hoffman said he has worked to remedy the problems his ex-employee created.

"I've done a lot for the community that it's about time I retire anyway," Hoffman said.
