Need to get rid of hazardous household waste? San Juan Co. planning collection event in Aztec

Residents of Bloomfield, Kirtland an unincorporated areas of San Juan County will have the chance to dispose of unwanted materials conveniently and at no cost this weekend as county officials hold a hazardous waste collection event in Aztec.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23 in the parking lot of the San Juan County Administration Building, 100 S. Oliver Drive in Aztec. Residents of Bloomfield, Kirtland and San Juan County will need to bring proof of residency to participate. Waste from residents of Farmington and Aztec will not be accepted, as those communities have their own waste pickup options.

Residents will be able to drop off used batteries, light bulbs, auto fluids, gas, brake fluid, antifreeze, household cleaners, gardening chemicals, insecticides, weed killers, fertilizers, aerosols and paints, according to a flier distributed for the event.

Among the items that will not be accepted at the event are biomedical or medical waste, explosives, compressed gasses, 55-gallon drums, yard waste, ammunition, appliances, tires, electronic waste and business or industrial waste.

Other forms of waste can be refused for any reason, according to the flier.
