Events rescheduled, cancelled in response to Aztec shooting
Aztec Sparkes will go on as planned on Saturday
- An event slated to take place tonight at Aztec Ruins National Monument will take place Friday night instead.
- All Aztec High School sporting events planned through the weekend have been cancelled.
- Two prayer services are planned for this afternoon and evening in Aztec.
FARMINGTON — An event that is part of the annual Christmas celebration in Aztec has been rescheduled in response to today's shooting that left two Aztec High School students and the shooter dead.
Two students were shot to death this morning, and the shooter later died at the scene, according to San Juan County authorities.
In response, the Evening of Lights at Aztec Ruins National Monument that was scheduled for this evening has been postponed. Nathan Hatfield, chief interpretation at the monument, said the event has been rescheduled to 6 p.m. Friday.

Aztec City Commissioner Sheri Rogers said other activities associated with Aztec Sparkles, the city's annual Christmas celebration, will go on as planned. A variety of activities are scheduled to take place throughout the day on Saturday downtown.
Bryan Sanders, athletic director for Aztec High School, said all high school sports events are cancelled for the weekend.
There will be prayer services in Aztec today at 4:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 501 Mesa Verde Ave., and at 6 p.m. at Minium Park, 200 N. Park Ave.

Carmen Ray, secretary at the parish office for St. Joseph and Holy Trinity Catholic parishes, said both services were arranged in response to the shooting.
Earlier in the day, information was circulating about a prayer vigil taking place at Hutchison Stadium in Farmington. But Farmington High School posted on its Facebook page that no such event is scheduled.
"FHS would like to encourage people to attend the scheduled events in Aztec to support our Aztec neighbors," the Facebook post states.
