Alleged aggravated battery victim in stable condition

FARMINGTON — The victim of an alleged aggravated battery was in stable condition today after being found unconscious and suffering from severe head trauma last weekend.

A suspect in the case, Devon McKay, 22, has been arrested and accused of a third-degree felony count of aggravated battery, according to court records.

McKay is accused of punching and kicking a man multiple times on the night of March 24 in the intersection of Oriole Avenue and Cardinal Street on the west side of Farmington, according to the probable cause statement.

He did not have legal representation today.

The victim had suffered severe head trauma and was diagnosed with a brain bleed and had teeth missing, according to court documents. A Farmington Police Department corporal at the scene stated the victim had a large amount of swelling and bleeding to his face.

Farmington police spokeswoman Georgette Allen said the victim was in stable condition today at the San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington.

Farmington officers found McKay at a residence in the 1700 block of Cardinal Street after they were dispatched there around 11:55 p.m. on Saturday on a report of two men fighting in the roadway.

During interviews with police, McKay said he punched and kicked the victim multiple times after he knocked the victim to the ground.

McKay told police he got into an altercation with the victim after the victim refused to leave a birthday party at the residence.

He added that the victim pulled a knife out during the fight and swung it at him.

The San Juan County District Attorney's Office has filed a motion to hold McKay without bond pending trial, according to court documents.

He made his first appearance in Farmington Magistrate Court Monday and was being held without bond today at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center.

McKay's preliminary hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. on April 4 in Farmington Magistrate Court.
